Sacred Heart University has received national recognition for the integrity of its individualized and engaging education programs from Colleges of Distinction, a website and guidebook that acknowledges higher-education institutions that meet its four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.
For the fifth consecutive year, SHU earned this recognition for excellence in the classroom and high-impact practices that are part of every student’s undergraduate education. Other factors that contributed to the hard-earned designation are the student-centered programs and academic offerings; an evolving campus, faculty and staff dedicated to the needs and demands of the growing student population; and students, faculty and staff dedicating more than 100,000 hours of community engagement.
Student-centered programs include service learning, global learning and interdisciplinary activities; collaborative assignments and projects; undergraduate research; capstone projects; study abroad opportunities; and internships.
“We are pleased to be recognized yet again by Colleges of Distinction and appreciate their faith that Sacred Heart is a place that lives up to its markers for distinction,” said SHU President John J. Petillo. “Acknowledgement for those merits is an honor and, more importantly, it assures our students we are dedicated to them and their futures.”
“We are so proud to see Sacred Heart University walking the walk,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for the guidebook publisher. “Colleges of Distinction knows that a truly valuable education can’t be measured by rank or reputation. Students learn and thrive best when they embrace hands-on learning in a vibrant, welcoming community. That’s why it’s so encouraging to find SHU take such an innovative approach with its curriculum.”
Colleges of Distinction’s selection process comprises detailed interviews and research for each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts, alongside its general education programs, career development, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more. Schools are accepted based on the extent to which they adhere to its four distinctions.
In addition to the recognition for SHU’s high-impact approach to education, the Jack Welch College of Business, Isabelle Farrington College of Education and College of Nursing also received the special designation. These additional accolades were borne out of a need for college curricula that are comprehensive, not only in course material, but also in practical and soft-skills development. According to Colleges of Distinction, SHU has met these needs with a blend of liberal arts education, program-specific training and abundant opportunities for real-world application.
Sacred Heart’s specialized badges represent a curriculum that invests in students’ innovative and critical thinking. Colleges of Distinction grants this further honor after a thorough review on such qualities as accreditation, program breadth and a track record for success.
