Tree Lightings Kick Off Christmas Season

Quad and West Campus traditions bring the community together

Sacred Heart University kicked off the Christmas season this week with two festive tree lightings, filling campus with yuletide joy and good tidings.

The SHU community gathered at the entrance of West Campus for its third annual tree lighting ceremony on November 27. Neighbors and friends of the University were invited to stop by the festive and fun occasion where members of the SHU Choir sang carols as the SHU Brass Ensemble provided accompaniment. SHU Dining passed out ornament-shaped cookies and hot chocolate. Santa Claus even made an appearance to hand out candy canes and pose for photos with the crowd.

When it was time, all the children in attendance gathered to help light the tree. The group, led by President John J. Petillo counted down from 10, before they pushed the button and watched the tree glow in red and white bright lights. Special guests included State Representatives Laura Devlin and Cristin McCarthy Vahey, State Senator Tony Hwang and James McCusker of the Stratfield Village Association.

Two days later, students, faculty and staff gathered on the Lower Quad to light that Christmas tree. Again, the SHU Choir gathered to sing songs and get into the holiday spirit. Guests enjoyed cookies and cocoa following the ceremony. The annual main campus tradition was hosted by Student Life.
