Sacred Heart University Wins Gold Award for Promoting a Healthy Workplace

Employee Wellness Program brings eighth consecutive award to SHU

The Business Council of Fairfield County has honored Sacred Heart University as a gold award winner in its annual Healthy Workplaces Best Practices Competition .

Sacred Heart earned its eighth consecutive recognition because of its success in promoting healthy lifestyle and practices among its employees and workplace. Since 2010, SHU has earned the gold award seven times and achieved the platinum award once.

To encourage employees to become more aware of their health, the Office of Human Resources instituted the SHU Employee Wellness Program in the fall of 2007. Aiming to promote good health and provide faculty and staff with ways to improve their well-being, the effort has contributed to the University’s healthy workplace recognition in recent years, says Sally Schettino, program leader.

Among the wellness program offerings are, “incentives that give employees a credit of $360 annually towards their medical premium,” Schettino says. “They are required to have a biometric screening and to follow up with an online health assessment.

“In the past year, we held ‘Lunch & Learn’ talks and fitness classes, and we provided health information, which is typical in a year. Last summer, we brought Field Goods to campus. It’s a company that delivers fresh, organic produce to campus for anyone who subscribes, and it is a big hit.”

Schettino says SHU will continue to implement its specialized and focused wellness program to equip employees with the best possible means to improve their well-being.
