Band members from Sacred Heart, Robert Morris and Saint Francis universities joined forces in a special, first-ever performance at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., during New Year’s week. The bands represented the Northeast Conference (NEC), in which each of the colleges’ athletic programs compete.
“As band directors, we’ve talked for years about how we can support each other and, of course, we’re always looking to provide great musical experiences for our kids,” said Keith Johnston, director of bands at Sacred Heart University. “We decided to put this special performance together, and I’m thrilled at the enthusiasm the kids brought to the performance. The reaction from the crowd was fantastic.”
The project had the support of NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris, whose staff created the logo for the performance.
The bands began planning for the trip in August, coordinating travel dates and repertoire. “Each band held separate rehearsals at their home college, and then we gathered for one combined rehearsal at Disney the day before our performance,” said Johnston. “All band members were very professional, and we worked quickly and efficiently to put together a great concert of favorite pep band songs.”
The band performed on the Waterside Stage at Disney Springs, one of the premier performance venues of its kind in the world.
