Sacred Heart University and Webster Bank Arena (WBA) have entered a new, five-year partnership that will bring the men’s hockey team to the Bridgeport facility for home games, beginning this season.
As part of the agreement, SHU hockey will have a dedicated locker room within WBA. The facility will include athletic training and equipment areas, as well as a team room and coaches’ offices.
“Being able to call a venue such as Webster Bank Arena our home is an important step for our hockey program and will help us provide the best opportunity for our student-athletes,” said Bobby Valentine, executive director of athletics. “The game day experience for our student-athletes, alumni and fans will be tremendous, and we are excited about what the season and future will bring.”
Hockey Head Coach C.J. Marottolo said the arrangement shows SHU’s commitment to the hockey program. “The new locker room will have custom lockers and provide a home for our current players, and being in a venue such as Webster Bank Arena will be an asset to our recruiting,” he said.
“We are extremely pleased to add Sacred Heart hockey to our impressive list of year-round entertainment,” said Michael Picker, president of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, management team for the arena. “We know our first-class facility will be a great asset to the University as it looks to upgrade its hockey program.”
The Pioneers’ 2016-17 home regular season schedule begins Oct. 15, when 2015 NCAA Division I National Champion Union College visits WBA for a 2 p.m. contest. Sacred Heart will play 14 games at Webster Bank Arena during the season, including a Sunday matinee Nov. 13 with the defending Atlantic Hockey regular season champion, Robert Morris University. The Pioneers also will welcome Niagara, Air Force, Mercyhurst, Holy Cross, Canisius and Bentley during the regular season.
