Sacred Heart’s women’s bowling team survived three elimination matches before downing the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds 4-1 to gain its third Northeast Conference Championship victory.
At day’s end, Sarah Rhodes, who was a constant in the Pioneer lineup all season, was named to the All-NEC first team. Lauren Hoffman had her second nod for the All-NEC second team, freshman teammate Casey Smith was voted to the All-Rookie team, and Head Coach Becky Kregling earned her first NEC Coach of the Year award
The Pioneers came into the NEC Championship as the No. 2 seed after a 14-6 conference record during the regular season earned them a share of the Regular Season Championship. Getting a bye into the championship bracket, SHU dropped its first match to the Blackbirds 4-2.
Entering the second day of competition with one loss, the Pioneers swept Saint Francis University and then moved on to the undefeated Blackbirds. The women carried over the momentum from the day’s early victory, using four 200+ games to down LIU in six games. Amanda Nardiello and Hoffman came through when the pressure was high, ensuring SHU’s win.
