The new women’s varsity rugby team emerged as victor in its inaugural game against Molloy College in September, when a strong second half led the Pioneers to their first win, 52-35.
Rachel Mazza opened the game with a run over 20, but Molloy’s Lions got on the board first with back-to-back tries before the Pioneers came back to score two of their own. Molloy scored two more tries before the half, taking a 28-19 lead at that point.
The Pioneers held Molloy to just one try in the latter half, while going on to score 33 second-half points to clinch their first win. They opened their dominant second half with an impressive 40-yard run by Colleen Semenick for a try, with a good conversion kick from Lauryn Kostopoulos cutting Molloy’s lead to just two points, 28-26.
Another ROT from Semenick for a try with a good conversion gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 33-28. Charlotte Tallman added another six points with a 35-yard run for the try before Molloy earned its first try of the half. The women added two more tries before the end of the game.
Announcement of the women’s rugby club team’s elevation to varsity status was made in November of 2014.
