Equestrian Team Wins Hunt Seat, Western Regional Championships

Outscores Mount Holyoke to win final competition of season

The University’s equestrian team clinched both the Hunt Seat and Western Regional Championships for the first time in program history in 2015.

After taking second and first place in a Western doubleheader at Massachusetts, the Pioneers headed into the final competition of the regular season just five points behind Mount Holyoke College in the standings. In that final competition, the team outscored Mount Holyoke 32-27, tying at 230 in the overall standings. Totaling both team’s best five scores of the season to determine the tiebreaker, the Pioneers were the undeniable champion, winning the tiebreaker 167-151.

Leading the region for most of the season, the women’s Hunt Seat squad clinched the Regional Championship in 2015 at a competition hosted by Central Connecticut State University. Behind six blue and four red ribbons, the team earned its bid to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone Championship. The Pioneers tied for second place at the Zone Championship, where the top two teams moved on to nationals, but then lost the tiebreaker to Tufts University.

The team sent two Hunt Seat riders to the 2015 IHSA National Championship. Katie Gray qualified for the coveted Cacchione Cup, while Melissa Yacubich earned a chance to compete for a national title in Individual Novice Horsemanship.
