Men’s Champion Basketball Team Returns for Alumni Day Honor Ceremony

Still the only men’s team to win national championship in SHU history

The Office of Alumni Relations was proud to welcome back the 1986 Division II National Championship men’s basketball team as part of Alumni Day on February 6. This championship team is the only one to win the title in SHU’s history, and the first university in New England to claim it.

More than 100 alumni and their families came to the Pitt Center for a special reception in honor of the legendary team. They spent the afternoon watching a doubleheader played by the current men’s and women’s teams.

Many of the champions — including Keith Gatling, Joseph Jackson, Tony Judkins, Ed Jurin, James Regis, Travis Smith and Howard White — attended the ceremony during halftime of the men’s game. Then-Head Coach Dave Bike, Team Manager Fred Ulbrick and Sports Information Director Alexander Sulzycki were also on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Bobby Valentine, executive director of athletics, presented each member of the team and staff with a framed resolution from the Town of Fairfield, dated April 28, 1986, recognizing Coach Bike and his team for their achievements.

Bike was instrumental in bringing the team back to campus for this special event. To view additional photos, click here.
